The Emperor's Nightingale - Císařův slavík (dir. Jiří Trnka, 1948, 72 minutes, 35mm)
Co-presented with The Melbourne Cinémathèque
In legendary Czech puppet animator Jiří Trnka's sublime adaptation of the famous Hans Christian Andersen fairytale The Nightingale, the story occurs as a fever dream of a well-to-do yet sickly young boy imprisoned in his home.
To be preceded by two of Trnka's remarkable late short works: an eerie, dystopian depiction of alternative parenting practices in Cybernetic Grandma (Kybernetická babička, 1962, 29 minutes) and a bawdy Decameron adaptation, The Archangel Gabriel and Mrs. Goose (Archanděl Gabriel a paní Husa, 1964, 29 minutes).
All three films will screen on 35mm, courtesy of Národní filmový archiv.
Screening Saturday, May 25, 12.30pm, at ACMI Cinemas, recommended for ages 8+
Tickets for The Emperor's Nightingale, Cybernetic Grandma and The Archangel Gabriel and Mrs. Goose (Melbourne Cinémathèque passes) can be purchased from www.acmi.net.au or in person at the ACMI Tickets and Information Desk 03 8663 2583
